Magpies are medium to large, often colorful and noisy passerine birds of the crow family. The European Magpie (Pica pica) is a resident breeding bird throughout Europe, much of Asia, and northwest Africa. It is extremely similar to the American Black-billed Magpie (Pica hudsonia), which occurs in the western half of North America from Alaska to Oklahoma.
