Baby Birdorable: House Sparrow

If you think our Birdorable birds are cute as adults, what about when they are babies? Here are some baby photos (shared via Flickr) of the House Sparrow. House Sparrows are widespread across the planet, seen as pests in some countries where they are invasive, while they are struggling for survival in parts of their native Europe. For example, House Sparrows are considered endangered in the Netherlands. Tomorrow, March 20th is World House Sparrow Day. The theme for WHSP 2010 is We will save our House Sparrows and the day is meant to raise awareness and draw attention to the plight of this once-common bird and its decline in much of its natural range.

I love the idea of World House Sparrow Day, and I really appreciate the efforts of people who aim to save them. I think House Sparrows are really underappreciated by a lot of people just because they're common. I think they're quite beautiful, though. ^_^

I have a sparrow that my partner and I raised by hand: we found him when he was only a day old, kicked out of the nest because he has a leg deformity. We fed him every 20 min for the first week of his life, and watched him grow into a beautiful, sweet, independent little bird who now lives in a cubbyhole in our house. He has so much personality and is cuddly and sweet and smart, and I agree with Ashira that these little birds are SO underappreciated and misunderstood by most people. They are precious little wonders.
