Acorn Woodpeckers are medium-sized woodpeckers native to parts of western and southwestern North America and across parts of Central America. They are known for storing huge numbers of acorns in granaries drilled into old telephone poles or dead trees -- or even buildings. Acorn Woodpeckers have a striking black, white, and red plumage. They can be recognized by the deep red crown with black across most of the head and white at the forehead and lower cheeks.
