Abdim's Stork

About the Abdim's Stork
Also known as: White-bellied Stork
Abdim's Stork
Abdim's Stork is a small species of stork native to parts of sub-Saharan Africa. These migratory birds breed across central Africa, from around Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east. Outside of breeding time, they can be found south of their breeding range all the way down to South Africa.

Of the world's 19 species of stork, the Abdim's Stork is the smallest, measuring just 29 inches in height. Besides the diminutive size, Abdim's Storks can be recognized by their iridescent black body plumage, red knees, and, in breeding season, blue facial skin under the eyes and behind the beak.

Also known as the White-bellied Stork, the familiar name Abdim's Stork honors Bey El-Arnaut Abdim, past Governor of Wadi Halfa.
