African Jacana

About the African Jacana
Also known as: African Lily-trotter, Greater African Jacana, Jacana
African Jacana
The African Jacana is a species of wading bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. They can be recognized by their plumage, which is chestnut with a white neck. They have blue head shields and bills. And they have crazy long toes.

African Jacanas feed on insects, worms, spiders, and mollusks. They are found in wetlands like swamps and river backwaters. They use their long toes to distribute their weight which allows them to walk on floating vegetation as they search for food.

African Jacanas have interesting breeding behavior. Rather than forming monogamous couples, females will mate with multiple males during the breeding season. Males care for the nest and raise the chicks on their own.
