The Boat-billed Heron is a medium-sized species of heron native to parts of Central and South America. It is found in mangrove swamp habitat where it feeds on aquatic fare including shrimp, insects, fish, and amphibians. Boat-billed Herons are primarily nocturnal.

Boat-billed Herons are named for their large and wide scoop-like bills. In some places they are known simply as Boatbills.

Boat-billed Herons are known for their elaborate courtship displays. Pair-bonding rituals include mock fights, raising and lowering of the head crest, and bill clapping.
