The Brown-headed Parrot is mostly green with a grey brown head and yellow under its wings. This last feature give it its Latin name; cryptoxanthus means 'hidden yellow'.

There are three subspecies of this parrot all living in Africa: 1. Poicephalus c. cryptoxanthus lives ranges from South Africa to Southern Mozambique; 2. Poicephalus c. tanganyikae lives from Mozambique to Kenya; 3. Poicephalus c. zanzibaricus lives on Zanzibar and Pemba Island
