Great Crested Grebe

About the Great Crested Grebe
Also known as: Southern Crested Grebe, Tippet Grebe
Great Crested Grebe

The Great Crested Grebe is a species of grebe that lives across Europe and Asia. Some populations are migratory, leaving freshwater breeding grounds in the north for warmer climes during the winter.

Great Crested Grebes are the largest species of grebe found in Europe. Adults in breeding plumage are striking, with white faces and contrasting feathers at the back of the head. Feathers at the top of the head form the namesake crest.

Great Crested Grebes are skilled swimmers and divers. They feed on fish that they hunt underwater. Chicks can swim almost at hatching and learn diving skills from their parents.
