About the Javan Hawk-Eagle
Also known as: Java Hawk Eagle
Javan Hawk-Eagle
The Javan Hawk-Eagle is a medium-sized bird of prey endemic to the island of Java in Indonesia, where it is the national bird. Due to habitat loss in its restricted range, it is an endangered species, with fewer than 350 breeding pairs in the wild in the early 2010s.

Adult Javan Hawk-Eagles can be recognized by their very tall dark crests, dark brown upperparts, and heavily barred underparts. Juvenile birds have little barring and are more rufous in color. Javan Hawk-Eagles live in humid forest habitat and feed on Javanese rats and other small prey like squirrels, snakes, doves, and monkeys.
