The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is a very small species of woodpecker found across a wide range in Europe and Asia. They are non-migratory, year-round residents throughout their territory. Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers are found in temperate and boreal forest habitat.

Male Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers can be recognized by their black upperparts with white spots or bars and crimson red crown. Adult birds also have a wash of buff-colored tinge at the forehead, lores, and breast. There are over 10 subspecies of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker recognized by various authorities across their range with a variety of differences in plumage and size.
