Purple Finch

About the Purple Finch
Also known as: Purple Linnet
Purple Finch
The Purple Finch is a relatively large species of finch that breeds in forests across northern North America. In the winter some birds move south, especially across the eastern half of the United States. Like some other northern finch species, they are prone to erratic irruptions.

Male Purple Finches, like our Birdorable cartoon version, have a rich cranberry red plumage with streaky wings. They have a bulbous beak. Females and immatures are grayish tan with a similar streaking pattern but little to no red.

Purple Finches feed on tree seeds, as well as other plant material like buds, berries, nectar, and fruits. Insects may also be taken.
