Red-eyed Vireo

About the Red-eyed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
The Red-eyed Vireo is a small songbird that breeds across a wide range of northern and eastern North America, and winters in northern South America. This pretty songbird is named for the red eyes the birds develop in their second year.

Red-eyed Vireos breed in forest habitat. Females are the nest-builders, putting together an open cup nest made of twigs and other material, often held together with spider webs.

The longevity record held by Red-eyed Vireos belongs to a male individual who lived to be at least 12 years old, based on data collected by bird banders.
