The California Gull is a medium-sized gull. It is similar in appearance to the smaller Herring Gull, except the California Gull has a smaller yellow bill with a black ring, yellow legs and brown eyes.
California Gulls can be found the west of North America from Canada to Eastern California and Colorado. They breed on inland lakes and marshes.
It is the state bird of Utah. A Seagull Monument in Salt Lake City commemorates the 'Miracle of Gulls'. According to Mormon folklore, seagulls miraculously saved the 1848 crops by eating thousands of insects that were devouring the fields.
The California Gull has a conservation status of Least Concern as of November 2014.
