The Tufted Coquette is a spectacular species of hummingbird found in northeastern parts of South America. Male Tufted Coquettes have an outlandish plumage, with a bright rufous head-crest and protruding light rufous neck feathers with black spots. Females lack both the crown and the neck feathers, but otherwise have a somewhat similar body plumage color palette of greens and oranges.
Typical of hummingbirds, the Tufted Coquette feeds on nectar with the occasional insect taken as prey. Tufted Coquettes are found in near forest habitat as well as developed and open areas, like plantations. These hummingbirds are among the smallest in the family, with relatively small proportions, like a shorter bill.
