The Cattle Egret has gone through one of the most rapid natural expansion of any bird. Originally native to southern Spain and Portugal, subtropical Africa and parts of Asia, it began expanding its range at the end of the 19th century and can now be found on every continent. In the United States it has bred in almost all states and has been seen all the way in Alaska.
Non-breeding adults are mainly white with a yellow bill and grey-ish-yellow legs. During the breeding season adults get orange-buff plumes on the crown, breast and back.
