African Grey Parrot

The African Grey Parrot is a medium-sized parrot and is native to Africa. It is considered one of the most intelligent birds in the world. This beautiful species is very popular in aviculture. Outside of aviculture, it is commonly known as the Grey Parrot.

African Greys are predominantly grey in plumage, with accents of white. They have red or maroon tail feathers. They feed on nuts and fruits, supplemented by leaves.

African Grey Parrots are particularly noted for their cognitive abilities, which are believed to have evolved as a consequence of their history of cooperative feeding on the ground in Central Africa. There are two subspecies of Grey Parrot: Congo African Grey and Timneh African Grey.

Conservation

The African Grey Parrot is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and was last assessed in 2013 by BirdLife International. This species has been uplisted to Vulnerable because the extent of the annual harvest for international trade, in combination with the rate of ongoing habitat loss, means it is now suspected to be undergoing rapid declines over three generations (47 years).
