The Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher is a tiny, vividly colored bird found only on the island of Madagascar. It has a brilliant orange-red body plumage contrasted with a white breast. Despite its bold coloring, this little kingfisher can be surprisingly hard to spot as it darts through the dense understory of Madagascar’s forests.
Unlike many kingfishers, this species does not fish. Instead, it feeds on insects, spiders, and small invertebrates found in the leaf litter or low vegetation. It hunts by perching quietly, then swooping down quickly to grab prey from the ground or leaves.
The Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher lives in humid lowland forests and is highly dependent on undisturbed habitat. It nests in small burrows dug into earth banks where it typically lays a clutch of 4 eggs. Its breeding habits remain poorly documented due lack of study.
