White-winged Crossbill

About the White-winged Crossbill
Also known as: Two-barred Crossbill
White-winged Crossbill

The White-winged Crossbill is a species of finch with a very special bill shape. The ends of the mandibles are crossed. They use their unique bills to feed on pinecone seeds.

White-winged Crossbills are found in forest habitats across northern parts of North America and Eurasia. As their supply of food, pine seeds, varies across their range depending on temperature and other growing conditions, these gregarious birds are somewhat nomadic. Their opportunistic feeding habit leads them to be opportunistic breeders; they will nest anytime when food availability allows.
