The Hawaiian Goose, called Nene in Hawaii, is a threatened species of waterfowl that once thrived on the Pacific island state. Today the Nene numbers 800 wild birds after a captive breeding program began in the 1950's. more... At that time the wild population was down to just about 30 individuals.
