Feathered Vegetarians: The Diet and Delight of American Goldfinches

Birdorable American Goldfinch on thistle

American Goldfinches, with their vibrant yellow plumage and cheerful songs, are a delightful sight in many North American backyards. These charming birds are not only admired for their beauty but also for their unique feeding habits. Unlike many other bird species, American Goldfinches have a diet that is almost exclusively vegetarian.

These birds are particularly fond of nyger seed and sunflower seeds, which many bird enthusiasts provide at feeding stations. These seeds are a staple in their diet, offering the necessary nutrients to keep them energetic and healthy. However, American Goldfinches are also known to forage for wild seeds, with milkweed and thistle being among their favorites. This natural diet plays a crucial role in their lifecycle, especially during the breeding season when they require extra energy.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the American Goldfinch is its strict vegetarian diet. This dietary preference is quite rare among birds. Their choice of food is so specific that it influences their breeding season. Unlike many birds that breed in the spring, American Goldfinches wait until late summer. This timing ensures that a plethora of seeds, their primary food source, is readily available for feeding their young.

Observing American Goldfinches in your backyard can be a rewarding experience. These birds are not shy about visiting feeders, especially if they are stocked with their preferred seeds. Watching them flit from feeder to feeder, one can't help but be mesmerized by their bright colors and lively behavior. It's interesting to note how they skillfully extract seeds, showcasing their adaptability and dexterity.

For those lucky enough to have American Goldfinches visit their yards, it presents a wonderful opportunity to observe these birds up close. You might notice them selecting specific seeds or see their feeding behavior change with the seasons. Each observation can contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of these beautiful birds.

In addition to enjoying them in your garden, you can also celebrate the American Goldfinch by exploring Birdorable's collection of American Goldfinch t-shirts and gifts. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or just someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, these products are a great way to express your love for the American Goldfinch.

Do American Goldfinches visit your yard? What do you see them eating?

Birdorable European Greenfinch

For 18 days we're adding a new Birdorable bird every day as part of our Birdorable Bonanza 2010. Today's bird is the European Greenfinch, shown above with two other common European feeder birds: the European Goldfinch and Chaffinch. The European Greenfinch, known simply as Greenfinch in its native English-speaking countries, is a small bird of the finch family. Like other finches, they feed primarily on seeds, and will visit garden feeders to eat sunflower seeds and other bird seed. Greenfinches are social birds and it is not uncommon to find large flocks of them feeding together, especially outside of breeding season. They will form mixed flocks with other small birds, like European Goldfinches or Chaffinches.

Birdorable Gouldian Finch

For 18 days we're adding a new Birdorable bird every day as part of our Birdorable Bonanza 2010. Today's bird is the beautiful Gouldian Finch! The Gouldian Finch is one of the most wildly colored birds on Earth. Native to Australia, this little finch's plumage includes feathers of red, yellow, green and black. The head is either red, black or yellow. Formerly considered three different kinds of finches, we now know that these are actually color variants of the same species that exist in the wild. Yellow is the rarest. Because of their amazing plumage, Gouldian Finches are very popular in aviculture. Since 1959 it has been illegal to export the birds from their native Australia. Still, the species is considered threatened today, mainly due to habitat loss. Other factors contribute to the decline of the species, including easy predation - due to their bright colors. If you'd like to learn about the effort to conserve the Gouldian Finch in Australia, visit Save the Gouldian Fund.

Our Pair of European Goldfinches

Since February we've been getting new visitors to our backyard: a pair of European Goldfinches. In the beginning just one came to feed from a bag of nuts we have hung up in a tree. After a few days he brought his mate along and since then they've come by almost every day:

European Goldfinch

These birds are quite common here in the Netherlands but we never had one in our backyard before. This brings the total number of birds that have visited us here to twelve: Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Jackdaw, Black Bird, Great Tit, Blue Tit, House Sparrow, Collared Dove, Herring Gull, Magpie, Robin and Starling. European Goldfinches are named 'Putter' or 'Distelvink' in Dutch. The latter translates as 'Thistle Finch' for it likes to eat small seeds like thistle seeds. What's funny is that we have a feeder full of thistle seeds in our backyard but we've never seen our two Goldfinches eat from it; they always go straight for the nuts! After seeing the cute Goldfinches in our yard we've added the species to this website.
